Eve Maid – (Wall•E)

Vectober Day #10

Main Theme: Robot Selling Food

EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) is the deuteragonist in WALL•E. She is an advanced probe droid. Numbered “01” by AUTO from the Axiom, EVE is one of several robots who are sent to Earth on a scanning mission. An advanced model equipped with a quasar ion cannon and capable of flight and high speeds, she is determined to complete her task and initially fails to notice her would-be robot Romeo, WALL•E. The two robots subsequently bond, however, and the more she sees how much WALL•E cares for her, the more she falls for him, eventually making it her top priority to protect him.

Dedicated to her mission in scanning for any signs of self-sustaining plant-life on earth, EVE was not interested in WALL•E and was even hostile towards him at first, but befriended him when they formally introduced each other and when he took her to safety.

After WALL•E saves EVE from a dust storm, he takes her to his trailer and shows her all the treasures that he has collected over the years, including the plant that he found. EVE quickly recognizes the plant, scans it and uses a tractor beam to pull it into her vegetation-containing compartment. EVE deactivates to a state in which only a blinking green beacon signals that she is on. Determined to protect EVE, he shelters her from rain, lightning and more until the Axiom return vehicle picks her up to return her to the Axiom.

When EVE is first seen in the movie, she dedicated to her task and hostile, not tolerating anyone or anything getting in her way of her task. However, after meeting WALL•E, she began to warm up to him and befriend him.

EVE has all necessary parts of a probe droid. She has an ergonomic suitable shape, scanner, flight at high speeds to cross ground quickly and morphable fingers for different purposes.  EVE is also armed with a plasma cannon in her right arm. However, it is odd that a simple probe would have a plasma gun. The gun might have been installed to remove obstacles and attack enemies. An example of this is when she blasts away an electromagnet she is trapped by and when she frees herself from a garbage cube she is stuck in.

Master Shifu – (Kung Fu Panda)

Vectober Day #9

Main Theme: Batik on Animal Body

Master Shifu is one of the main supporting characters of the Kung Fu Panda franchise. He is the current senior master of the Jade Palace and trainer of many kung fu warriors, including Po (the Dragon Warrior), the Furious Five, and Tai Lung.

A former student of Master Oogway, Shifu became a highly skilled master of kung fu who hoped that his first student, Tai Lung, would become the legendary Dragon Warrior. Some time after Tai Lung’s betrayal, however, Shifu went on to train Tigress, Mantis, Monkey, Viper, and Crane, the Furious Five. Though these students became well-known for their heroics, none of them were selected to be the Dragon Warrior, and Shifu was outraged when Po was chosen instead. Witnessing the panda’s potential and determination however, Shifu eventually came to believe in him, teaching Po the skills needed for him to ultimately save the Valley of Peace. He now acts as both a friend and mentor to Po.

It is known that Shifu departed his family to dedicate himself entirely to the duties of kung fu. However, in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, Shifu explained that he and his father had traveled to other villages to sell fake amulets ever since he was a young boy. One day, his father dropped him off at the Jade Palace, promising to return in five minutes. Shifu waited for him until nightfall, when eventually Master Oogway found him and took him in, making him a student at the Jade Palace.

Magic Mirror – (Snow White)

Vectober Day #8

Main Theme: An Icon for Beauty

The Magic Mirror is a mystical object that is featured in the story of Snow White. The Magic Mirror is owned by the Evil Queen and has been depicted in different versions as either a hand mirror or a mirror on the wall. Every morning, the Evil Queen asked the Magic Mirror the question “Magic mirror in my hand, who is the fairest in the land?”. The mirror always replies: “My Queen, you are the fairest in the land.” The Queen is always pleased with that, because the magic mirror never lies. But, when Snow White reaches the age of seven, she becomes as beautiful as the day and even more beautiful than the Queen and when the Queen asks her mirror, it responds: “My Queen, you are the fairest here so true. But Snow White is a thousand times more beautiful than you.” This resulted in the Evil Queen enlisting a huntsman to kill Snow White and bring her Snow White’s lungs and liver.

After eating the lungs and liver of a boar that the Huntsman passed off as Snow White’s lungs and liver, the Evil Queen asked the Magic Mirror the question “Magic Mirror in my hand, who is the fairest in the land?” The mirror replies: “My Queen, you are the fairest here so true. But Snow White beyond the mountains at the seven Dwarfs is a thousand times more beautiful than you.” This caused the Evil Queen to disguise herself as different women to kill Snow White.

After the latest attempt with a poison apple which was undone by the Prince and Snow White marrying him, the Evil Queen asked the Magic Mirror who the fairest in the land was, the Magic Mirror quoted “You, my Queen, are fair so true. But the young Queen is a thousand times fairer than you.” The Evil Queen learned too late at the wedding that the young queen in question was Snow White which eventually leads to the Queen’s death which varied per version.

Henry J. Waternoose – (Monster, Inc)

Vectober Day #7

Main Theme: Everyday Tools Turn into a Monster

Henry J. Waternoose (a.k.a. “Mr. Waternoose” and simply “Waternoose”) is one of the two main antagonists in Monsters, Inc., alongside Randall Boggs. He is an overweight gray crab-like monster wearing a business suit with six legs, two six-fingered claws, and five eyes.

In the first film, Mr. Waternoose is the CEO of Monsters, Inc.He is one of three owners, all cast down from lineage. He inherited the factory from his father when he was 142 years old, and turned it into the modern energy factory that appears at the beginning at the movie.

He is first shown at the very beginning of the film, warning Thaddeus Bile and the trainees about the dangers of a human child after Thaddeus has unsuccessfully attempted to frighten a simulation child in bed.

Although Waternoose is an antagonist in this movie, he has a gentle, fatherly facade and is only driven to villainy out of desperation to keep Monsters, Inc. afloat in the midst of the energy crisis. He becomes more villainous as this drive and desperation strips away his morals and he is determined to not let anything stop what he thinks will be the best way for the company to keep going, never taking into account looking for other energy resources.

Although Waternoose ended up becoming involved in abducting Boo despite his claims of children being toxic to monsters, it is never made clear whether he knew children were not toxic, and thus lied about their danger to the monsters, or if he did truly believe they were toxic, but felt saving the company from bankruptcy was worth the risk of being poisoned by a child and potentially killed. Given that he holds Boo at one point in the movie, the former is most likely correct.

Though Waternoose states that the company had been in his family for three generations, any attempt to name him as “Henry J. Waternoose III” is an assumption that his name was passed down from grandfather to father to son. His father’s and his grandfather’s names are never stated and could have easily been unique names for each one.

Patrick Star – (Spongebob Squarepants)

Vectober Day #6

Main Theme: Ice Cream Made of Mud and Stone

Patrick Star is a fictional character in the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. He is voiced by actor Bill Fagerbakke and was created and designed by marine biologist and cartoonist Stephen Hillenburg. He first appeared on television in the series’ pilot episode “Help Wanted” on May 1, 1999.

Seen as an overweight, dimwitted pink starfish, Patrick lives under a rock in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom next door to Squidward Tentacles’ moai. His most significant character trait is his lack of common sense, which sometimes leads him and his best friend, SpongeBob SquarePants, into trouble. Patrick is unemployed and a self-proclaimed expert in the “art of doing nothing”.

The character has received positive reactions from critics and fans alike. Patrick has been included in various SpongeBob SquarePants-related merchandise, including trading cards, video games, plush toys, and comic books. He is a leading character in the 2004 full-length feature film The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and its 2015 sequel The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

Patrick is the ignorant but very humorous best friend of SpongeBob SquarePants. He is portrayed as being an overweight dimwitted, pink starfish residing in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Patrick gets dumber throughout the series and has been shown to make many ludicrous mistakes. Despite this, he has occasionally been portrayed as a savant, with articulate observance to certain subjects in specific detail (in which cases he is ironically less dense than SpongeBob, as he expressed suspicion to Squidward’s resentment toward them in the episodes “Jellyfishing” and “SB-129”, implying he sort of knows that Squidward hates them; he is also a natural boat driver, a skill SpongeBob has never managed to master). However, he always reverts quickly back to his usual, unintelligent self after displaying a moment of wisdom. He holds no form of occupation except for several very brief stints working at the Krusty Krab and at the Chum Bucket in a variety of positions, and mostly spends his time either clowning around with SpongeBob, catching jellyfish with him, or lounging beneath the rock under which he resides.

At home, Patrick is typically depicted either sleeping, watching TV, or engaged in the “art of doing nothing”, at which he is an expert. All the furnishings in the space under his rock are made of sand, and Patrick can simply opt to quickly build up furniture as needed; even so, his living space is sparse and contains only the barest essentials. Aside from his best friend SpongeBob, who is often impressed by Patrick’s capacity to come up with naïve yet genius plans or solutions, Patrick frequently irritates those around him and is confounded by the simplest of questions or subjects. The characters of Mr. Krabs and Squidward have no patience for Patrick’s stupidity, and the former does not pay him much regard; Clancy Brown, who provides Mr. Krabs’ voice, said, “The only person that he [Mr. Krabs] doesn’t hire is Patrick because Patrick is just too stupid to work for nothing.” Sandy often gets annoyed by Patrick, but still sees him as a friend.

Oni Mask – (Japanese Demon)

Vectober Day #5

Main Theme: Myself As An Ogre

Oni () are a kind of yōkai from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres, or trolls. They are popular characters in Japanese art, literature, and theatre.

Depictions of oni vary widely but usually portray them as hideous, gigantic ogre-like creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads. They are humanoid for the most part, but occasionally, they are shown with unnatural features such as odd numbers of eyes or extra fingers and toes. Their skin may be any number of colors, but red and blue are particularly common.

They are often depicted wearing tiger-skin loincloths and carrying iron clubs called kanabō (金棒). This image leads to the expression “oni with an iron club” (鬼に金棒 oni-ni-kanabō), that is, to be invincible or undefeatable. It can also be used in the sense of “strong beyond strong”, or having one’s natural quality enhanced or supplemented by the use of some tool. In addition to this, it can mean to go overboard, or be unnecessarily strong or powerful.

The word “oni” is sometimes speculated to be derived from on, the on’yomi reading of a character () meaning to hide or conceal, as oni were originally invisible spirits or gods which caused disasters, disease, and other unpleasant things. These nebulous beings could also take on a variety of forms to deceive (and often devour) humans. Thus the Chinese character 鬼 (pinyin: guǐ; Jyutping: gwai2) meaning “ghost” came to be used for these formless creatures.

The invisible oni eventually became anthropomorphized and took on its modern, ogre-like form, partly via syncretism with creatures imported by Buddhism, such as the Indian rakshasa and yaksha, the hungry ghosts called gaki, and the devilish underlings of Enma-Ō who punish sinners in Jigoku (Hell). They share many similarities with the Arabian Jinn.

Mokujin – (Tekken 3)

Vectober Day #4

Main Theme: The Lonely Tree

Mokujin (Japanese: 木人 – “Wood(en) person”) is a fictional character in Namco Bandai Games’ Tekken video game series. Mokujin first appeared in the 1997 video game Tekken 3. Mokujin does not have his own fighting style. Instead, he mimics fighting styles from other characters, which varies from match to match.

Mokujin is a training dummy made from a 2,000-year-old tree. He comes alive in the presence of great evil and it was said that he would become the world’s last resort when humanity are unable to deal with them. While he appears to be mute (his “voice” are the sounds of wood-clicks), he is able to communicate with the humans using telepathy. Due to his experience as a dummy, he is able to imitate any fighting style. In Tekken 3, Mokujin is awakened when Ogre, the God of Fighting, was released. After Jin Kazama defeated Ogre in The King of Iron Fist Tournament 3, Mokujin grew lifeless once more, but he had a smile on his face. In Tekken 5, with the awakening of another powerful evil entity (Jinpachi Mishima), Mokujin has come to life once more. After the defeat of Jinpachi Mishima, Mokujin again became lifeless. In Tekken 6, Mokujin again comes to life when a being of great evil and the source of Devil Gene, Azazel awakened. Other than the main series, Mokujin appears in the non-canonical game Tekken Tag Tournament and its sequel Tekken Tag Tournament 2. He also appears as one of the unplayable penultimate bosses in free-to-play game Tekken Revolution.

Jimmy Hopkins – (Bully)

Vectober Day #3

Main Theme: The Worst Phobia

Bully, originally released in the PAL region as Canis Canem Edit, is an action-adventure video game developed by Rockstar Vancouver and published by Rockstar Games. It was released on 17 October 2006 for PlayStation 2. A remastered version of the game, subtitled Scholarship Edition, was developed by Mad Doc Software and released on 4 March 2008 for Xbox 360 and Wii, and on 21 October 2008 for Microsoft Windows. Bully was re-released on PlayStation 4 available via digital download from PlayStation Network on 22 March 2016. An updated version of the Scholarship Edition, titled Anniversary Edition, was developed by War Drum Studios and was released for Android and iOS on 8 December 2016.

Set within the fictional town of Bullworth, the story follows a student and his efforts to rise through the ranks of the school system. The open world design lets players freely roam Bullworth, which includes a number of towns. The game is played from a third-person perspective and its world is navigated on-foot, skateboard, scooter, bicycle or by go-kart. Players control James “Jimmy” Hopkins, a student who is involuntarily enrolled at Bullworth Academy. He discovers that the school is filled with bullies, and becomes determined to bring peace, ultimately becoming more respected among town groups. Jimmy is also expected to attend class, which is a main gameplay aspect. In Scholarship Edition, a two-player competitive multiplayer mode lets two players compete for the highest score in different classes.

Despite initial controversy for its expected violence, and homosexual content, Bully received highly positive reviews upon release, with praise directed at the game’s missions, narrative and characters. The original version of Bully sold over 1.5 million copies, and received multiple year-end accolades.

Oddish – (Pokémon)

Vectober Day #1

Main Theme: Favourite Plant

Oddish  is a dual-type Grass/Poison Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

Oddish resembles a blue plant bulb with a round body, beady red eyes, and oval, foot-like roots. Five large, green leaves sprout from its head. As demonstrated in the anime, these leaves are prehensile and can be used to scale vertical surfaces and catch light objects.

Known by the scientific name Oddium Wanderus, Oddish lives in grasslands. A nocturnal Pokémon, Oddish buries its sensitive body in the ground during the day to avoid the sun and fool predators. If its leaves are pulled in this state, it will respond by shrieking horribly. It starts to move when its leaves begin absorbing moonlight, which it uses to grow. Oddish will wander up to 1000 feet (300 meters) during the night to scatter its seeds and find a nutrient-rich patch of soil in which to plant itself. The more fertile the earth, the glossier its leaves will be. It is thought that its feet become like tree roots while planted. In the past, Petal Dance was its signature move.
